The Phone Call

It was two o’clock in the night. Rory sat on the couch and scrolled on her phone. She was 19 years old and it was the holidays, and her parents were out of the house. Outside, the rain dropped on the streets and the rain beat against the windows. Suddenly, a bright light shone into her house.  “What the hell?” Rory whispered.

A few seconds later, her phone began to ring. Her screen showed an unknown number. She wasn’t sure if she should pick up the phone, but she did. “Hello?” Rory asked into the phone. Nobody answered. “Hello? Who is there?” she tried again. However, there was nothing, except silence. She rolled her eyes and ended the call. “Maybe a group of kids who think this is funny,” she said.

One minute later, the phone rang again. The same unknown number. “Hello?” Rory asked again. “Hello,” a deep and dark voice said from the other side. Rory sat up. “Who is there?”

A few seconds of silence. Then the voice said: “Ghostface.” Rory laughed. “Very funny. Who are you really?” “You don’t believe me?” the voice asked. “No.” “That’s a mistake. A big one.” Rory got scared. “What do you want?” Rory asked again. “Just want to talk.” “And where did you get my number?” “Your friend gave it to me. In the café. She didn’t mind.” “Which friend?” “Does it matter? The point is, now I have it.” “And why did you call me?” “Because I like your voice when you’re scared.”

Rory didn’t know what to say now. The man was quiet for a few seconds. Then he asked, “What are you doing now?” “I had watched videos and now I am phoning with you.” “I know,” the voice said. Rory didn’t know what the voice knew whether he knew that she had watched videos or that she was phoning with him. Or both? She didn’t know. Automatically, Rory looked out of the window. Nobody was there. “You’re playing a stupid game,” Rory said. “Maybe.” A quick silence. “So,” Ghostface said, “now it’s my turn to ask questions. Where is your family?” “They are on holiday in Russia.” “So, you’re alone?” “Yes…” “Do you have a boyfriend?” Rory smiled and played with her hair. “Why? Do you want to ask me on a date?” “Maybe.” Rory’s smile got bigger. “So, do you have a boyfriend?” the man asked again. “No.” “You never told me your name.” “Why do you want to know my name?” “Because I want to know what you look like.”

Rory stopped smiling. She wanted to say something, but the call was cut off. She slowly turned around. Everything looked normal. Then she looked into a big mirror and saw something that made her hold her breath. Behind her stood a tall man in a black coat. On his face, he was wearing a white mask with a screaming face, and he was holding a shiny knife in his hand. Rory screamed and dropped her phone. She ran up the stairs to the bathroom. She tried to lock the bathroom door. Her hands were shaking, but she did it. Everything was quiet.

But then…

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Someone was at her bathroom door. She held her mouth closed with her hands to be quiet, and she held her breath. “Rory,” said the same voice as the one on the phone. She didn’t answer. Unexpectedly, she heard the door handle move.

Slowly.

And again.

Then silence.

Suddenly, with a loud “Crash!”, the door sprang open.

Ghostface walked slowly into the room. Rory tried to run around him, but she was too slow. He caught her arm and pulled her close to him. Rory screamed as loud as she could. Then everything became silent.

A few minutes later, Ghostface looked down at her. Rory’s face was white, her body felt heavy, and there was something in her chest. A knife. Blood dripped slowly down onto the floor. “Goodbye, dear Rory,” Ghostface said with a happy voice. Ghostface dropped Rory’s body and went out into the darkness.

The apartment was quiet. Ghostface was gone, and Rory lay motionless on the floor.
